Ocean House

Welcome to Stonington Borough and our historic Ocean House Shoppes and Suites.  Located on the corner of Water and Church Streets, in the Village business district, this treasured property has front row seats to all major happenings in town!  Enjoy the many parades, garden and art shows, and year-round festivities outside our doors, and lose yourself meandering the stunning historic homes and gardens, and the Borough's lovely waterfront micro parks and trails.

 

Built in 1840 as a full service inn with over 25 rooms, Ocean House once catered to travelers and distinguished locals, serving meals and providing entertainment from its two grand halls that once flanked the central staircase.  These rooms were removed by a former owner, along with the original covered porch that spanned the front of the building in order to accommodate two, sidewalk level commercial shops, with classic bay windows.

 

Following the Civil War, Ocean House opened the Inn to injured soldiers. Publishing a formal complaint, covered by the local paper, the innkeeper implored the Burgesses and other influential types to rally for a real hospital to serve those in dire need. During the 'great depression', the stone structure in the rear of the property, was a commercial bakery sustaining those in need. Over time, rudimentary, larger living spaces were established, combining rooms, adding plumbing and switching from coal heaters to a central heating system.

 

After suffering years of neglect, Tim and Lori have peeled back time and while leaving the exterior facade and interior as true to its original structure as possible, they have transformed this cornerstone of the Borough into a collection of warm and welcoming suites, fully equipped and providing short term, transition, and vacation stay accommodations.
